Police officer stabbed in daylight attack

A FEMALE police officer has been stabbed multiple times, allegedly with a screwdriver, during a violent daylight attack on a street in Wagga.
Police say the constable — aged in her mid-20s — was allegedly set upon by a man she had stopped for riding a bicycle without a helmet.
“She was punched multiple times in the head before being stabbed in the arm and abdomen with what is believed to be a small screwdriver,” police said.
The vicious assault allegedly occurred outside a home on Cutler Avenue in Kooringal shortly before 2pm on Friday, May 16.
The injured officer, who is attached to the Southern Region Enforcement Squad based in Wagga, was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken by ambulance to Wagga Base Hospital.
Police say she was transported in a stable condition and was also being assessed for suspected finger fractures and a head injury.
Her alleged attacker — a 31-year-old man — was arrested at the scene and taken to Wagga Police Station.
No charges had been laid at the time of publication.
