Man, 84, critical after brutal domestic attack in Junee Shire

AN ELDERLY couple have been savagely assaulted in what is being described as a violent, domestic violence-related home invasion in the Junee Shire.

The shocking attack unfolded in the quiet village of Bethungra, 30km north-east of Junee, on Saturday morning — leaving an 84-year-old man in a critical condition and his 82-year-old partner in hospital.

Police allege a 51-year-old man known to the couple forced his way into their White Street home before unleashing a brutal assault and fleeing.

Emergency services raced to the scene about 9.30am, finding both victims with multiple injuries. They were treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being rushed to Wagga Base Hospital.

On Sunday, police confirmed the elderly man remained in a critical condition, while the woman was listed as stable.

A crime scene was established at the Bethungra home and examined by specialist detectives.

The 51-year-old man was arrested in Bethungra shortly after the attack and taken to Wagga Police Station where he was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm (domestic violence) and common assault (domestic violence).

The accused was refused bail and expected to appear via video link before Parramatta Local Court on Sunday.
