Man dies in hospital after Wagga unit fire

A 61-YEAR-OLD man has died in hospital after being rescued from a unit fire in Wagga.
Emergency services were called to South Parade just after 7am on Thursday, September 4, where multiple Fire and Rescue NSW crews arrived to find a ground-floor unit well alight.
Police said the man was still inside when firefighters reached the scene.
He was rescued from the unit and treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Wagga Base Hospital in a critical condition.
It is understood a second man, believed to be aged in his 50s, was also hospitalised with burns sustained during the rescue.
In a statement released late Friday night, NSW Police confirmed the 61-year-old had since died from his injuries.
A crime scene was established at the property and examined by specialist forensic officers.
Detectives from the Riverina Police District are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the blaze.
A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
