POLICE are investigating the cause of a fiery crash that claimed the life of a man on the Hume Highway north of Gundagai on Sunday afternoon.

The crash occurred at the intersection of the highway and Westend Lane at Berremangra, between Jugiong and Bookham, just before 2pm on October 19.

It’s understood a grey Toyota sedan left the roadway and hurtled down an embankment, where it crashed into a tree and burst into flames.

Despite the efforts of NSW Ambulance paramedics, the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle – a man believed to be aged in his 50s – could not be saved and died at the scene.

NSW Rural Fire Service crews worked to extinguish the blaze, but not before the vehicle was destroyed.

The northbound lanes of the Hume Highway were closed for around six hours between Coolac and Bowning while crash investigators examined the scene.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are continuing.
