A WOMAN has died and an infant has been airlifted to hospital following a horror single-vehicle crash on the Hume Highway at Gundagai.

Emergency services were called to the northbound lanes near Springflat Drive just after 9.30am on Tuesday, December 2, where they found a white SUV had left the road and collided with a tree.

A NSW Police spokesperson said the driver — a woman believed to be in her 30s — died at the scene despite the best efforts of NSW Ambulance paramedics.

An infant, who police say the sole passenger in the SUV, was also treated at the scene before being airlifted to Canberra Hospital in a stable condition.

Officers from the Riverina Police District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash and will prepare a report for the information of the Coroner.

As is standard procedure, a crime scene has been established, with northbound traffic reduced to a single lane at the crash site.
