A P-PLATER has lost his licence and copped a hefty fine after he was allegedly caught speeding through a Riverina school zone at almost 80 kilometres per hour.

The 19-year-old man from Yanco was allegedly clocked by Narrandera Highway Patrol travelling at 75 kilometres per hour through a school zone in Leeton about 2:37 pm on Monday, March 10.

Police said the 40 kilometre per hour school signs were flashing and in working order at the time of the incident.

Officers activated their lights and sirens and stopped the man’s Black Toyota 86 a short distance away.

The driver, who produced a P2 Provisional licence, was issued with an infringement notice for exceeding the speed limit by more than 30 kilometres per hour in a school zone, costing him $1,384 and six demerit points.

The teen’s licence was also suspended on the spot for a period of three months.
