WHAT started as an April Fool’s joke is now gaining momentum, with the Junee community rallying behind the idea of turning ‘The Big Train’ into a real landmark and tourism attraction.

On Tuesday, The Junee Bulletin unveiled its annual April Fools’ prank, publishing a fake news article announcing that Junee had been selected as the home of Australia’s newest oversized landmark—a colossal steam locomotive monument celebrating the town’s rich railway heritage.

“Standing an impressive 10 meters high and 16 meters long, The Big Train will be built at Kanaley Square in North Junee,” the article stated.

“Kanaley Square was chosen for its prime position near the level crossing, placing The Big Train in close proximity to Junee’s famed Licorice and Chocolate Factory—a key tourist hotspot.”

Accompanying the story was a mock artist’s impression, showing how the fictional attraction could look.

▪️CONCEPT CAPTURES IMAGINATIONS

The Bulletin’s concept suggested the attraction could be packed with exciting features, including:

  • An observation deck in the smokestack
  • A railway museum at its base
  • A themed café and souvenir shop
  • A functioning steam whistle
  • Train-themed events and festivals
  • An immersive virtual reality experience

Modelled after the C38-class steam locomotives, The Big Train would further establish Junee as a premier railway tourism destination, complementing the town’s heritage-listed Roundhouse and railway station.

▪️FROM JOKE TO REALITY?

While it was meant to be a prank, the overwhelming public response suggests that the idea might not be so far-fetched after all.

The Bulletin’s article reached thousands of people on social media, triggering an outpouring of enthusiasm from locals and visitors alike, with many calling for the concept to become a reality, highlighting its economic, tourism and cultural potential.

The Junee Licorice and Chocolate Factory also chimed in, writing on Facebook: “We think this is a great idea!”

The idea has even caught the attention of railway history groups and tourism advocates, who see potential in attracting train enthusiasts from around the world.

Enthusiasts say the structure would not only be a tribute to history but also a boon for tourism, cementing Junee’s place alongside Australia’s famous ‘Big Things’ like the Big Banana and Big Pineapple.

The Big Train would also create new jobs, and support the town’s local businesses, hotels and eateries, providing a significant boost to the local economy.

The outpouring of enthusiasm has sparked real discussions about the feasibility of such a project.

While there are no official plans yet, the community’s response has opened the door for further conversations with local businesses, government bodies, and tourism groups.

“The joke may be over, but the idea seems very real,” said Jaydan Duck, owner of The Junee Bulletin.

“The community reaction has been incredible. By combining Junee’s rail heritage, Australia’s Big Things culture, and the world’s passion for trains, The Big Train has the potential to become a globally recognized attraction.

“With strong community backing and strategic partnerships, this vision could become reality—turning an April Fool’s joke into an economic and cultural game-changer for Junee.”
