Police called to suspicious car fire near Junee

POLICE have been called to a suspicious car fire on the Olympic Highway near Junee.

The incident was reported shortly after 6pm on Friday, April 17, near the intersection of Strathmore Lane, about 4km south of the Jail Break Inn café.

RFS crews from Old Junee and Yathella responded and had extinguished the blaze by 6.20pm.

The vehicle, reported to be a grey Volkswagen Tiguan, is believed to have been abandoned.

One woman told The Junee Bulletin that the vehicle has been parked on the roadside for more than a week, adding that its number plates had also been removed in recent days.

Firefighters requested police attend due to the circumstances, with officers attached to the Riverina Police District arriving on scene shortly after 6.30pm.

The Olympic Highway remains open.
