Junee honours UN peacekeepers in special remembrance service
DOZENS of people have gathered in Junee for a special service of remembrance and thanksgiving recognising UN peacekeepers serving in some of the world’s most dangerous and fragile regions.
The service was held at St Luke’s Anglican Church on Sunday, May 24, marking the fourth such ceremony led by retired military chaplain Rev David Hilliard.
More than 80 people attended the service, held under the 2026 theme “Invest in Peace”, which paid tribute to military, police and civilian peacekeepers who have supported United Nations missions across the globe for nearly eight decades.

Those gathered acknowledged the estimated 68,000 personnel currently serving across 11 United Nations peacekeeping missions worldwide, often amid increasingly complex global challenges.
Solemn tribute was also paid to the more than 4,400 peacekeepers who have lost their lives while serving, including 59 recorded during 2025.
The Australian and UN flags were formally presented during the ceremony, while wreaths were laid by Warrant Officer SEAC Ken Robertson, OAM, on behalf of the Australian Defence Force, alongside Junee RSL Sub-Branch representative Chief Petty Officer Luke Corcoran.

A blue beret and illuminated blue candle were positioned prominently upon the communion table, serving as powerful symbols of peacekeeping service and sacrifice.
WOFF Robertson delivered what organisers described as a moving reflection, speaking of “love in action” and drawing upon the words of 1 John 3 and the Beatitudes, including the well-known verse: “Blessed are the peacemakers.”
Rev Hilliard reinforced the message through his homily, reflecting on the enduring importance of peace, service and compassion.
Following the service, attendees gathered in the parish hall for morning tea, where tables decorated with white linen and sprigs of olive and rosemary created a welcoming atmosphere.
A highlight of the gathering was the ceremonial cutting of a specially prepared blue cake depicting a peacekeeper in action and bearing the message: “Thank You UN Peacekeepers.”
