EMERGENCY services were confronted with a highly distressing scene near Tumut on Friday afternoon, where a man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

NSW Police confirmed that just after 2pm, officers were called to Wee Jasper Road at Bombowlee, in the Snowy Mountains region, following reports of a concern for welfare.

Upon arrival, NSW Police said officers from the Riverina Police District attempted to speak with a man, believed to be aged in his 40s, who was seated in a parked vehicle and allegedly armed with a firearm.

Tragically, the man discharged the weapon.

Despite the best efforts of NSW Ambulance paramedics who treated the man, he could not be revived and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

He is yet to be formally identified.

A crime scene was established, and a critical incident team from the Murrumbidgee Police District has been assigned to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The investigation will be subject to an independent review, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
