Why this man is running 300km around Junee’s harness racing track
JUNEE ultra runner Svene Kupe has embarked on a gruelling 300-kilometre endurance challenge, setting out to complete 375 laps of the Junee Harness Racing track in a bid to inspire others to chase goals they once thought impossible.
The experienced ultra and trail runner began the mammoth challenge shortly after sunrise on Friday, July 24, on what was Junee’s coldest morning of the year so far.
Frost blanketed the Junee Showgrounds and temperatures plunged below zero, with an apparent ‘feels like’ temperature of almost -5 degrees Celsius recorded at 8am.
Despite the bitter conditions, Kupe set off undeterred, beginning what is expected to be more than a day of running around the 800-metre harness racing track.

Unlike most endurance events, there is no organised race, no finish-line medal and no prize waiting at the end.
Instead, Kupe said the challenge is about testing his own limits and encouraging others to believe they are capable of achieving more than they think.
“The hardest part won’t be the distance,” he said.
“It’ll be doing it alone. Through the day. Through the night. No race atmosphere. No free T-shirt. No medal waiting at the end.
“I’m doing it to see what’s possible and, hopefully, inspire someone else to chase a goal they once thought was impossible.”
By shortly before 1.30pm, after five hours and 39 minutes on his feet, Kupe had reached the 50-kilometre mark.

Providing an update from the track, he said the challenge had already delivered a few unexpected moments.
“It’s been pretty eventful,” he said.
“I’ve been swooped by magpies, which I think is a bit too early.
“Magpies are also trying to steal my food and I’ve had a lot of visitors, which has been pretty nice.”
For Kupe, the challenge extends far beyond the 300-kilometre target.
His hope is that by pushing himself well outside his comfort zone, others might be inspired to pursue ambitions they once believed were beyond reach.
At the time of publication, the local runner remained on the track, continuing his journey towards the 300-kilometre milestone one lap at a time.
