Residents enjoy joyful July at Cooinda Court

AN early Christmas celebration, cafe catch-ups, shopping adventures, chocolate-making and giving back to charity have made July one to remember for residents at Junee’s Cooinda Court, as the aged care home’s new resident bus opens the door to more outings and community connections.

From festive celebrations to day trips and community fundraising, Cooinda Court staff have continued to go above and beyond to create meaningful experiences that keep residents active, connected and smiling.

The excitement began on July 14 when Cooinda Court celebrated Christmas in July, transforming the facility into a festive winter wonderland.

Residents were treated to live entertainment from Fred Cummins and the Jazzy Jaz Band, who had many tapping their feet and singing along to Christmas classics and timeless favourites.

Adding to the festive spirit, a surprise visit from Santa Claus delighted residents before they sat down to a traditional roast turkey lunch complete with plum pudding and warm custard.

Staff described the day as a chance to bring “a little Christmas magic” to the middle of winter, with the celebration made possible through the efforts of the dedicated Cooinda Court team and community supporters.

Just two days later came another milestone, with residents embarking on the very first outing aboard the facility’s brand-new resident mini bus.

The inaugural trip saw residents travel to Junee’s Railway Cafe for coffee, morning tea and conversation, a seemingly simple outing that represented something much bigger.

For many residents, it was their first opportunity to head into town together in the new vehicle, enjoying the freedom to once again visit local businesses and spend time out in the community.

The group thanked Deb and the team at the Railway Cafe for their warm hospitality, while also acknowledging Scott from Wagga Motors for his assistance in helping bring the new bus into service.

Staff believe the vehicle will be transformative, allowing residents to enjoy more regular social outings, shopping trips and local experiences.

That promise quickly became reality.

On July 28, the new bus headed to Cootamundra for a day of bargain hunting at The Reject Shop, where residents happily browsed the aisles in search of hidden treasures before enjoying a hearty lunch at The Olde General Store.

The cosy cafe, known for its vintage charm and home-style cooking, provided the perfect setting for lunch, while the journey itself was filled with lively conversation and the sounds of favourite hits from the 1940s and 1950s playing through the bus.

The following day, residents demonstrated that community spirit doesn’t stop at Cooinda Court’s doors.

Following a special fundraising morning tea, residents proudly presented $162.45 to the Pink Ladies, supporting volunteers who work tirelessly to assist people affected by breast cancer and their families.

Resident representative Marg S presented the donation to Pink Ladies volunteers Jeanette and Kerrie, saying it was rewarding to have the opportunity to help others.

“It felt good to be able to give back and help those in need,” she said.

The busy month concluded on Thursday with another memorable outing, this time to the Junee Licorice and Chocolate Factory.

Residents enjoyed morning tea together before rolling up their sleeves to create their own giant chocolate freckles to take home.

They also watched firsthand as chocolate and licorice products were made and, of course, sampled a few sweet treats along the way.

While each activity offered something different, together they reflected Cooinda Court’s commitment to ensuring residents remain active, connected and engaged.

Whether it’s celebrating Christmas in the middle of winter, supporting local charities, enjoying a coffee with friends or exploring neighbouring towns, staff continue to create opportunities that enrich residents’ lives and strengthen their connection with the wider Junee community.

With the new resident bus now on the road, it’s safe to say July is just the beginning of many more adventures to come.
