A MAN has died after a police pursuit ended in a horror crash in the Riverina.

Police say officers attached to Murrumbidgee Police District were patrolling Pinehill Road at Narrandera about 7.30pm on Friday, June 12, when they spotted a black sedan with cancelled registration.

Officers initiated a pursuit after the driver allegedly failed to stop.

Police say they lost sight of the vehicle for a short time before locating the sedan wedged beneath a B-double truck at the intersection of the Newell Highway (Cadell Street) and Audley Street.

The driver, a 43-year-old man, suffered critical injuries in the crash.

He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being airlifted to Canberra Hospital.

In a statement on Saturday morning, a NSW Police spokesperson confirmed the man had since died from his injuries.

A crime scene was established and the Newell Highway was closed between Larmer and Witton streets for more than 12 hours following the collision.

The highway remained closed at 8am on Saturday, with traffic being diverted via Adams Street.

A critical incident investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the pursuit and crash.

The investigation is being conducted by officers from Murray River Police District and will be subject to independent review by Professional Standards Command, with oversight from the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC).

The fatality is the second linked to a police pursuit in the Riverina in as many months.

On May 5, a man was killed near Rankins Springs after the vehicle he was driving collided head-on with another vehicle during a pursuit on the Mid-Western Highway.

The vehicle was torn into multiple pieces by the impact.
