POLICE are investigating the death of a woman whose body was found inside a house following a fire in the western Riverina.

Emergency services were called to reports of a house fire in Brougham Street, Moulamein, about 100 kilometres west of Deniliquin, shortly before 1.30am on Friday, July 17.

Police arrived to find the home well alight, with NSW Rural Fire Service crews working to bring the blaze under control.

The inferno was visible from across the township, with towering flames and a huge column of smoke dominating the night sky.

A crime scene has been established as police investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.

Moulamein, home to about 500 residents, is the oldest river town in New South Wales and sits at the junction of the Edward River and Billabong Creek.
