Firefighters rescue family dog as home burns in Wagga fire

A FAMILY’S pet dog has been rescued by firefighters after a fierce blaze tore through their Wagga home, destroying everything inside.

Fire and Rescue NSW received multiple triple zero calls alerting them to the house ablaze in Edney Street, Kooringal, shortly before 10am on Tuesday, August 11.

Crews were confronted by a large plume of thick, black smoke as they approached the street, prompting additional resources to be called in.

By the time firefighters arrived, the single-storey home was completely engulfed in flames, forcing crews to initially attack the blaze from outside.

“After successfully knocking down the fire, crews entered the premises to continue extinguishing the fire and searching for anyone inside,” Fire and Rescue NSW said.

Fortunately, the occupants, reported to be a mother and her young children, were not home when the fire broke out.

Their dog, however, remained at the property and was found in the backyard.

Witnesses had reportedly tried to rescue the distressed animal before firefighters were able to safely retrieve it and reunite it with its owner a short time later.

The house suffered extensive damage, with flames breaching the ceiling space and damaging part of the roof.

While the structure remained standing, its contents were destroyed, with significant fire, smoke and water damage throughout the home.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation, with the extent of the damage making it difficult for authorities to pinpoint how the fire started.
