A FOUR-YEAR-OLD child has died after becoming trapped inside a burning home near the NSW Central West town of Cowra.

Emergency services rushed to a property on Waugoola Road at Woodstock, about 22 kilometres north-east of Cowra, shortly before 3pm on Saturday following reports of a house fire.

Officers from Chifley Police District arrived to find the home well alight.

A woman and two children managed to escape the burning property, but a four-year-old child remained unaccounted for.

The woman was treated for smoke inhalation before being taken to Cowra Hospital in a stable condition.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews battled the blaze and extinguished the fire before making the devastating discovery of the child’s body inside the home.

Police have established a crime scene at the property as investigations begin into what caused the fire and the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.

No cause has yet been identified and inquiries remain ongoing.

A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.
