A STATE SHAKEN: Three women killed in horror 10 hours

TWO women, aged 23 and 90, have allegedly been stabbed to death and the body of a third 70-year-old woman has been found on a remote property following a horrifying day of violence across NSW.

Three men aged in their 30s and 40s have been arrested following the three deaths, which occurred within the space of just 10 hours on Saturday, September 19.

The news comes against a disturbing backdrop of violence against women across Australia, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese declaring the scourge a “national crisis” in 2024.

This year, Australian Femicide Watch recorded almost 50 women killed in violent incidents across the country by the end of August, with the independent tracker reporting the overwhelming majority had allegedly been killed by either a current or former partner, or a family member.

YOUNG WOMAN ‘STABBED TO DEATH’

The first tragedy unfolded in the Wagga suburb of Kooringal about 11.45am on Saturday, September 19.

Emergency services raced to a home on Ziegler Avenue following reports a woman had been stabbed.

NSW Ambulance paramedics and officers from Riverina Police District desperately performed CPR on the 23-year-old, but she could not be saved.

She died at the home.

Police were told a man known to the woman had left the property before emergency services arrived.

An 18-year-old man was initially arrested at the scene and taken to Wagga Police Station.

He was later released without charge before a 31-year-old man was arrested at a home on Menzies Avenue, also in Kooringal about 8pm.

He was taken to Wagga Police Station where he spent the night being questioned by detectives before being charged with domestic violence-related murder.

Police will allege in court the man was in a domestic relationship with the woman.

The 31-year-old was refused bail and is due to appear before a bail court today.

90-YEAR-OLD MURDERED

Just hours after the young woman’s death, emergency services were confronted with another horrific scene, this time at Bondi Beach.

Police were called to a unit on Chambers Avenue about 5.15pm following reports of a stabbing.

Officers found a 90-year-old woman suffering significant stab wounds to her torso.

Paramedics attempted to save her, but she also died at the scene.

A 47-year-old man, who police say was known to the elderly woman, was arrested at the home and taken to Surry Hills Police Station.

Following investigations overnight, he has since been charged with domestic violence-related murder and refused bail to face court on Sunday.

WOMAN’S BODY FOUND

Then, shortly before 10pm, another woman was found dead in the state’s north.

Police were called to a property on Ironbark Road at Mole River, about 40 minutes west of Tenterfield, at approximately 9.35pm following reports of a domestic violence incident.

Police allege a 37-year-old man entered a property and attempted to steal a vehicle before assaulting its 74-year-old male owner.

Officers arrested the 37-year-old before going to a neighbouring property.

There, they made the grim discovery of a body believed to be that of a 70-year-old woman.

She was yet to be formally identified early Sunday.

A house at the property had also been partially damaged by fire.

The woman’s death is now the subject of a major investigation involving detectives from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad.

Crime scenes have been established at both properties.
