Man hospitalised after violent knifepoint robbery in Wagga

A MAN has been taken to hospital after allegedly being slashed with a knife and bashed during a violent armed robbery in Wagga.

Emergency services were called to reports of an assault at a unit block on Bentley Place about 11am on Tuesday, July 28.

Officers attached to the Riverina Police District arrived to find a 40-year-old man suffering lacerations and a serious wrist injury.

Police allege the man was confronted in the unit complex courtyard by a 29-year-old man, who threatened him with a knife before allegedly assaulting him and stealing his cash and mobile phone.

The alleged offender then fled the scene on foot.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the injured man at the scene before he was taken to hospital for further treatment.

Following inquiries, police arrested a 29-year-old man at a unit on Edward Street about 1.25pm.

During the arrest, officers allegedly located and seized cash, along with quantities of MDMA and methylamphetamine, which will undergo forensic examination.

Police also recovered a knife believed to have been used during the alleged robbery after it was allegedly found discarded in a recycling bin on Kadala Lane.

The weapon has been seized for forensic testing.

The 29-year-old was taken to Wagga Police Station and charged with aggravated robbery inflicting actual bodily harm, committing a section 114 offence while having a previous conviction, and two counts of possessing a prohibited drug.

He was refused bail and is due to appear before a bail court on Wednesday, July 29.

Police said investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
