Homemade bombs allegedly found in Wagga home

TWO improvised explosive devices were allegedly found at a home in Wagga last week, triggering the deployment of the bomb squad.

A 30-year-old man remains behind bars, charged with 16 offences following the unsettling discovery on Thursday, August 20.

Police said the man was initially stopped and searched by officers attached to the Southern Region Enforcement Squad in Wagga about 8am on Thursday, August 20.

He was arrested and taken to Wagga Police Station after officers allegedly found him carrying small amounts of cocaine and MDMA.

Police subsequently searched the man’s Wagga home, where they allegedly discovered two improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

The Police Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit was called to the property to assess the devices and make the scene safe.

Once the property was declared safe, officers resumed their search and allegedly uncovered ammunition, a homemade firearm known as a “slam gun”, BB pellets, cannabis seeds and two vials of testosterone.

The 30-year-old was subsequently charged with 16 offences, including two counts of manufacturing a military-style weapon without a permit in relation to the alleged IEDs.

He was also charged with four counts of possessing a prohibited drug, eight counts of possessing ammunition without holding a licence or permit, possessing an unregistered firearm and contravening a domestic violence-related apprehended violence order.

The man was formally refused bail and is due to appear before Wagga Local Court in October.
