A NEWBORN baby has died and a second is fighting for life in hospital following a confronting discovery along the Murrumbidgee River in Wagga’s CBD.

Police were called to the riverbank behind Cadell Place, near Wagga Beach, shortly before 4.30pm on Saturday, May 2, following reports of a concern for welfare.

Officers attached to the Riverina Police District attended and located a 37-year-old woman in a tent with two newborn babies.

One infant was deceased. The second was in urgent need of medical attention.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the woman and the surviving baby at the scene before transporting them to Wagga Base Hospital, where police said the infant remained in a critical condition on Sunday morning.

The circumstances surrounding the incident were not immediately clear.

A crime scene remained in place on Sunday as detectives worked to piece together what led to the devastating discovery.

Investigations are ongoing.

Anyone with information that could assist police is urged to contact Wagga Police or Crime Stoppers NSW on 1800 333 000.
