Alleged fugitives caught in dramatic roof, dog squad arrests

AN Alleged fugitive has been chased down and bitten by a police dog, while another was found hiding in the roof of a home, following two separate police operations in Wagga this week.

The first arrest occurred in Ashmont on Tuesday, July 21.

Police say officers located a 32-year-old man wanted over an alleged serious assault hiding in the roof cavity of a home about 4.15pm.

The man is accused of assaulting a 40-year-old man at a home in Ashmont a week earlier, on July 14, allegedly leaving him with a significant head injury.

He was arrested and taken to Wagga Police Station, where he was charged with wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and specially aggravated enter dwelling with intent to wound.

He was refused bail and is expected to remain behind bars until his next appearance before Wagga Local Court in September.

The arrest came just hours after a separate critical incident in Ashmont, where a man armed with a firearm died following an hours-long police siege.

A second operation unfolded in Ashmont on Thursday, July 23.

About 5pm, officers attached to the Riverina Police District, assisted by the Dog Unit, moved to arrest a 30-year-old man wanted for outstanding offences.

Police allege the man attempted to flee on foot before being caught by a police dog.

“The male attempted to outrun a Police Dog and failed,” NSW Police said.

The 30-year-old was taken to Wagga Base Hospital for treatment before being charged over an outstanding parole board warrant, detention applications, intimidation (domestic violence-related), breach of bail, and resisting arrest.

He was due to appear before a bail court today.
