POLICE have allegedly uncovered more than five kilograms of cannabis during a traffic stop on the Hume Highway near Tumblong, the latest in a string of major roadside seizures along the busy interstate corridor.

Police say officers attached to Riverina Highway Patrol stopped a white Mitsubishi Outlander about 3.20pm on Sunday, May 24, on the Hume Highway at Tumblong, roughly 15 kilometres south-east of Gundagai, for the purpose of random testing.

According to police, the 38-year-old driver allegedly returned a positive roadside drug test.

A secondary test allegedly produced a positive result for cannabis, with the sample sent away for further analysis.

Police allege a subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered 5.08 kilograms of cannabis in the rear footwell, with an estimated street value of $27,500.

Officers also allegedly seized a knife and a further small quantity of cannabis.

The alleged drug haul came just hours after police seized more than $350,000 in cash during a separate traffic stop at the same location.

The driver and his 39-year-old passenger were arrested and taken to Wagga Police Station, where the driver was charged with possessing cannabis more than indictable and less than commercial quantity and possessing a prohibited drug.

He was granted strict conditional bail to appear before Wagga Local Court on Wednesday, August 5, and was also issued with a 24-hour prohibition order preventing him from driving.

The 39-year-old passenger was released without charge pending further investigation.

It’s the second significant drug seizure along the same stretch of highway in as many months, with police allegedly locating 54 kilograms of cannabis hidden inside a people mover in the same area in April.
