Giant bridge girders to roll into Junee on convoy of up to 10 B-doubles

UP to 10 B-double trucks carrying the giant steel girders for Junee’s new Kemp Street bridge are expected to roll into town next week, marking another major milestone in the long-awaited project.

According to an out-of-hours works notification issued by Inland Rail, the deliveries are scheduled to take place between 6pm and 10pm on Monday, August 3.

A 450-tonne crane will also be brought to the site and set up on the corner of Hill and Edgar streets, where it will lift each girder from the trucks and place it within the rail corridor ahead of installation.

All heavy vehicles will travel under escort, while temporary fencing and traffic control will be in place throughout the operation.

The enormous steel girders will form the main support structure of the new bridge deck.

Additional bridge components will continue arriving during normal construction hours between August 3 and 5, before further deliveries resume during the first and final weeks of September.

An Inland Rail spokesperson told the Junee Bulletin the first steel girders are expected to be lifted into place in late August, allowing the bridge to span the rail corridor for the first time.

“We expect installation to commence in late August,” the spokesperson said.

Major concrete pours for the bridge piers have now been completed, with crews turning their attention to the headstocks that will support the steel girders.

The deliveries come ahead of Inland Rail’s next 96-hour rail possession from September 12 to 15, during which crews will continue major bridge construction and undertake track realignment works.
