Teen in induced coma after being hit by car near Junee

A TEENAGER has been placed in an induced coma after being run over by a car on the Olympic Highway near Junee.

Emergency services were called to the highway near Warnes Gate Lane at Marinna about 5.20am on Sunday, August 23, following reports a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle.

Police said initial inquiries indicated the 18-year-old had been lying on the road prior to being struck, about 11 kilometres outside the Junee township.

The Junee Bulletin understands the teenager had been walking home to his grandparents’ house in Bethungra following a night out in Junee.

The teenager, who celebrated his 18th birthday earlier this year, suffered extensive injuries to his upper and lower legs.

He was conscious and breathing when emergency services arrived and was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being transported by road to Wagga Base Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Due to the severity of his injuries, the teenager was subsequently placed in an induced coma.

The Bulletin understands he has since undergone surgery and will require further operations as part of his treatment.

The Olympic Highway was closed for a little over an hour while emergency services managed the scene.

Police have confirmed an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is underway.
