CCTV released after $30K stolen from Junee pub

A JUNEE publican is appealing for information from the public after $30,000 in cash was allegedly stolen during a brazen early-morning break-in, with the licensee believing the hotel was deliberately targeted.

The burglary occurred about 4.15am on Sunday, June 21, at the Red Cow Hotel on the corner of Junction and Crawley Streets.

Publican James Tracey told The Junee Bulletin CCTV captured a man pacing along the footpath outside the pub moments before power to the building was cut and entry was gained to the hotel.

He has released the footage in the hope someone may recognise the person, their walk or the clothing they were wearing.

In an update on Thursday, Mr Tracey revealed $30,000 in cash was stolen during the break-in, including notes and coins.

“They’ve taken the lot,” he told 7 News Riverina.

“I work for every cent of that money. I feel violated.

“It’s going to be very tough to recover from this.”

Mr Tracey believes the hotel was specifically targeted, saying there were no obvious signs of forced entry and that whoever was responsible appeared to know where the keys and cash were kept.

“The person captured on the security cameras turns the power off, which kills my cameras,” he said.

“It’s definitely a planned-out job. My thinking is they’ve been in the hotel a couple of times, they’ve assessed the situation and knew exactly what to do.”

It’s understood CCTV also captured a person acting suspiciously outside the hotel at about the same time one week earlier, raising concerns the premises may have been scoped out before the break-in.

Mr Tracey hopes nearby security footage may help establish the movements of those responsible or identify any vehicle linked to the incident.

“We’re reaching out for any homes or businesses with cameras showing the road to check for any vehicles or a person between 1am and 5am.”

Residents and business owners are being urged to review CCTV, dashcam and security camera footage recorded during the relevant timeframe and report anything suspicious.

Anyone who recognises the person shown in the footage, or who has information that could assist the investigation, is asked to contact Junee Police or Mr Tracey on 0457 484 635.
