Driver killed in head-on crash at Five Mates Crossing

POLICE are investigating the cause of a fatal head-on crash that claimed the life of one driver and left another critically injured in the Riverina.

The crash occurred on the Olympic Highway at Five Mates Crossing, near Gerogery, about 100 kilometres south of Wagga, shortly before 2.30pm on Wednesday, August 5.

Police say two vehicles collided head-on on the bridge, about four kilometres outside Gerogery.

The driver of one vehicle, a 56-year-old man, died at the scene.

The driver of the second vehicle, a woman in her 60s, suffered critical injuries.

Police say she was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Albury Hospital in a critical condition.

The Olympic Highway remained closed in both directions for several hours while specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit examined the scene.

The bridge was built following one of the Riverina’s worst road tragedies, replacing the level crossing where five Wagga teenagers were killed when their car collided with an XPT train in 2001.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are continuing.
