Woman charged over fatal crash at Five Mates Crossing

A 63-YEAR-OLD Victorian woman has been charged with dangerous driving causing death following a fatal head-on crash on a Riverina bridge earlier this month.

The woman was driving one of two vehicles that collided on the Olympic Highway at Five Mates Crossing, about 100 kilometres south of Wagga, on Wednesday, August 5.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 56-year-old man, died at the scene, while the woman was taken to Albury Base Hospital in a serious condition.

The Olympic Highway remained closed in both directions for several hours as specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit examined the scene.

Following investigations, the 63-year-old woman was issued with a court attendance notice on Tuesday, August 25.

She has been charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, negligent driving occasioning death and not keeping left of the dividing line.

Her driving privileges have also been suspended in New South Wales.

The woman is due to appear before Albury Local Court in October.

The Five Mates Crossing bridge was built following one of the Riverina’s worst road tragedies, replacing the level crossing where five Wagga teenagers were killed when their car collided with an XPT train in 2001.
